Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is the most common form of vaginal infection, and is caused by an imbalance in the naturally occurring microbial flora where lactic acid producing lactobacillus species predominate.
BV symptoms are an abnormal vaginal discharge which can be thin, white or grey in appearance and has a distinct, unpleasant fishy odour. This discharge may be confused with other vaginal infections. BV is not associated with soreness, itching or irritation. Not every infection is BV however--other infections, such as yeast infections (Candidiasis), or infections with Trichomonas vaginalis (Trichomoniasis) are not caused by bacteria.
An office visit to your doctor or healthcare provider can help determine, through a simple test, if you have an infection of bacterial vaginosis.
Current Treatments of Bacterial Vaginosis
The standard medical treatment for BV is a course of antibiotics. Another treatment option is to use Relactagel (lactic acid gel) during or after a course of antibiotics. In many cases BV can recur after antibiotic therapy with recurrence rates as high as 70%. Clinical evidence shows that lactic acid (Relactagel) treatment in combination with antibiotics has the least recurrence episodes and has a better long-term treatment effect on BV.
For patients who are concerned or unable to take antibiotics, clinical evidence also shows that a treatment course of lactic acid (Relactagel) is as effective at relieving abnormal vaginal discharge and odour as a course of antibiotics, and can be used as an alternative treatment to antibiotics.
Relactagel has been clinically proven to relieve and prevent symptoms of bacterial vaginosis.
Restoring Vaginal pH
An intervention with Relactagel will lower the vaginal pH to 4.5, (which is the natural pH of the vagina). Relactagel restores and maintains the vaginal pH at 4.5 to prevent or inhibit overgrowth of unfavourable bacteria until such time as the favourable bacteria (lactobacilli) have become re-established and can maintain vaginal pH unassisted.
